Reaching International Students
When Ryota left his native country Japan to study journalism at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) in Texas, he didn’t know one person in the United States. Also, he was completely unchurched with no background in Christianity. During his first week at SMSU, a Chi Alpha leader invited him to a “Welcome to America” party. At the party, Ryota made friends with those from the Chi Alpha ministry. He says “I saw how genuine their lifestyle was. I wanted to live the rest of my life like that”. Through his new friendships, he learned more about Christ. Ryota stated, “seeing my sins and the forgiveness of Christ”, he became a follower of Jesus Christ.
During a Chi Alpha missions conference, Ryota “sensed the Holy Spirit calling him to full-time ministry”. Ryota earned a master’s degree in education. Upon graduation, he decided that God’s direction for his life was full-time university ministry with Chi Alpha at SHSU.

After several years ministering at SHSU, Ryota is now preparing to pioneer and direct a new Chi Alpha ministry at the University of Texas in Arlington (UTA). The student body at UTA is one of the most ethnically diverse campuses, home to 46,000 students from every state in the U.S. and over 100 different countries in the world.
Ryota is passionate to reach out to students, especially those who have never heard the gospel. Now more than ever, many international and American students do not know about the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Additionally, he desires to teach students (who grew up in church) to live for missions now, by reaching out to international students on American soil. Ryota says, “Today, collegians can be part of God’s mission worldwide by being intentional to share the love and message of Christ with students from nations at our doorstep”.
Thank you for investing in us to be a part of Ryota’s life. It is a privilege and joy to disciple him as he raises his missions funding, to launch a new Chi Alpha ministry at the University of Texas – Arlington.
